Humor, is the best antidote for politics, be it with newspaper cartoons or in an office. (It is said; cartoons say what the editorials can’t.) Without being sarcastic, brush off gossip with a smile and without commenting on it. This will give any gossip monger the signal that you’re uncomfortable and don’t want to be involved. Take any criticism as constructive and let it make you think rather than defend yourself. And never lose your cool, especially if you are a senior. This way you’ll help in keeping the workplace stress-free.
It is best to be neutral and true to yourself. While it’s good to have close relationship at work, and recognize colleagues you can trust personally and professionally, they should not interfere with your judgment of others. If that happens, you’d be seen as unprofessional. In fact you may then be the real reason for much office politics.
