PROBLEM: Certain modules of application programs are unnecessarily occupying memory and slowing down your computer.
SOLUTION: Just move the mouse pointer over the icons displayed in the system tray and you will see the names of the programs. Make a note of the ones that you do not require. Then right-click on the icon of a particular program and click
“Exit” or “Close”. It’s a good idea to permanently disable all the startup programs that are not required. Apart from your anti-virus program and some essential utilities and Windows system programs, disable everything else. Windows maintains a list of all the startup programs.
- Click “Start | Run”.
- In the text box “Open”, type ‘msconfi g’ without the quotes and press [Enter].
- In the System Confi guration utility that appears, click on the “Startup” tab.
- Increase the width of the “Command” column by dragging the separation line between “Command” and “Border”. You will now be able to see the names of the programs.
- Uncheck the programs that should not load with Windows. Exclude your anti-virus program and any commands that begin with “C:\Windows” as these are operating system programs.
- If you are more knowledgeable, you could click “Disable All” and then go about enabling the programs that must load with Windows (your anti-virus, operating system fi les, and some essential utilities).
- Finally click on “Apply” and then “OK”.
- Restart Windows.
You will notice an appreciable improvement in the startup time for Windows. This is because you have made more memory free by shutting down programs that are not required to be running in the background (the ones that automatically get loaded when starting with Windows).
